I’m not giving up on my little Honda. I am giving up on myself. After exhausting (pardon the pun) my available list of things that could be wrong with the Honda this morning, I’ve booked it an appointment the the local Honda indie. My pride weeps.
After working through the list of possible causes of my weird running I have eliminated everything but a problem with the carb, which I don’t know enough to solve, a problem with the engine (valves, piston rings, HG, etc), or something I already “fixed ”. Faced with the idea of re-re-checking all my work, a $90 diagnostic fee seems like a good option.
As for if it might be an exhaust problem, that has (mostly) been confirmed not to be true. I took it to the exhaust place this morning. After talking it over the the guy, he was reasonably convinced it wasn’t the exhast. Still, we took it off and I drove it around to confirm my suspicions and make sure th e problem had gone away.
It hadn ’t.
Ok. So yeah.... I’m out. Time to make this someone else’s problem.

Seems like a reasonable decision to me. There’s no use banging your head against a wall forever when you have a way to stop.

You should feel no shame. No one should for paying a professional to do something for you. I’ll gladly pay someone to do something I find annoying .

Whats the issue? Seems like a really simple motor to work on.

Ouch. Man way to kick a man while he is done. :-P
Primary issue is it will lose power and start to backfire on the highway. Only on the highway and only after sitting at the same throttle position for a while. The work that has been done to correct this is... extensive.

You made a valiant effort . No shame in calling in the troops now.

Ha, didn’t mean it that way. Actually, the car that’s given me the most grief when working on a seemingly simple issue was a 99 Civic. Anyway...
I checked your posts and think you were on the right track with ignition, but you replaced everything in there that should be causing you grief. How do the spark plugs look immediately after you have the issue? That would be my next step, especially if you can easily manipulate it to have the problem. Too much fuel? Not enough? etc. Could be something stupid like a rubber line getting hot or slowly collapsing at a certain amount of vacuum.

Don’t feel bad! I’m probably going to have to let a shop fiddle with the Volvo at some point if I can’t solve all the problems, which is looking more likely with each passing day. K-jet and brakes are logical , but I don’t want to deal with fluid(s) disposal or sourcing ye olde vacuum gauges.

There’s no shame in this. I tell myself the same. Unfortunately, I haven’t completely convinced me.
On the positive side, a pro recently and quickl y diagnosed a problem I couldn’t solve. The steering would shake a bit at speeds above 60 mph. It acted just like a wheel balance problem at the front. Swapping each wheel in turn with the spare didn’t improve things or i dentify a problem. I replaced suspension bushings (they were long overdue) to no improvement. I replaced the springs and dampers, though at 165k miles it was beyond due . Again, no improvement in the steering. The tie rods seem to be in good shape. The car was aligned with new tires and wheels balance. No improvement again.
I gave up trying to figure it out.
My mechanic figured out quickly that I had several bent wheels. Right. It was an obvious thing that I did not consider.
The best of luck to you.

As others have said, there is no shame in
being as total quitter.
Don’t worry... we won’t be (publicly admitting to) thinking less of you.
Nor will we openly wonder how others can fix seemingly more complex things while you couldn’t even fix this.
Don’t worry... the worst thing that could happen is
your car gets hooned mercilessly and you get a big wallet-raping bill after!!!
Nothing to worry about... nothing to worry about at all... Good Luck!

On a more serious note, let us know what the shop finds the issue to be... I’m curious.

I had the exact same experience with a bent wheel. Didn’t even enter my mind.

Update: New wheels are on with tires mounted & balanced. I still have the damn vibration in the steering. Damn.
